Sunscreen is the step most people skip — not for lack of knowing better, but because the product itself is rarely one you actually want to wear every day. Sun Emulsion changes that. It sits light, sinks in without a white cast, and uses no UV filters suspected of disrupting hormones. And it does more than shield: urea and ceramide NP reinforce the skin barrier while prebiotics support the microbiome. Through a season of life when skin is shifting — and often more reactive — this is protection you'll reach for without thinking. That's why it earned its place. Nothing here is by accident.

Best for — Everyday facial care with very high UVA/UVB protection
Skin type — All skin types, including sensitive, dry and acne-prone
Texture — Light emulsion that sinks in smoothly
AM or PM — AM; the final morning step
Fragrance — Fragrance-free
Shelf — Skin Through Change · Step 4 · Protect
Apply as the last morning step, after serum and moisturiser, before makeup. Use a generous amount — too little noticeably reduces protection. Reapply through the day, especially after sweating or swimming. Sunscreen is not a substitute for shade and clothing.
Modern UV filters — a blend of organic and physical filters (Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide) delivers very high UVA/UVB protection, with none suspected of disrupting hormones.
Ceramide NP — helps rebuild and strengthen the barrier.
Urea — provides intensive hydration and calms the skin.
Prebiotics (Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide) — supports and balances the microbiome.
Aqua, Dibutyl Adipate, Diisopropyl Sebacate, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Erythritol, Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Titanium Dioxide (nano), Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Zinc Oxide (nano), Cocoglycerides, Sorbitol/Sebacic Acid Copolymer Behenate, Urea, Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide, Stearyl Alcohol, Ceramide NP, Silica, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Caprylyl Glycol, Dehydroxanthan Gum, Lactic Acid.
Sensitive skin — Formulated without fragrance and preservatives; recommended by Skinome for sensitive skin.
Pregnancy — Skinome states nothing specific. If pregnant or nursing and unsure, speak with your midwife, doctor or skin therapist.
Storage & shelf life — Keep at room temperature; 12 months unopened, 6 months after opening.
Honest note on SPF — Protection depends on using enough; apply generously and reapply. Note: may mark white garments if applied to the neck.

Formulation

Protection that cares

Modern, photostable UV filters meet ceramide, urea and alpha-glucan – sun protection that hydrates and stays gentle on the skin barrier in the same gesture. Every ingredient earns its place; nothing is here just for show.

Evidence

Broad-spectrum, backed

Bemotrizinol alongside titanium dioxide and zinc oxide delivers stable, broad protection across UVA and UVB – well-documented filters you don't have to take on faith. The formula is labelled SPF 50+ and broad-spectrum.

For those who enjoy going deeper

Every product on our Top Shelf is supported by research before it earns its place. Here you'll find the evidence, ingredients and references behind our evaluation.

01Ingredient spotlight

hp. highlights four building blocks in this emulsion — not the whole INCI, but the ones that decided it belongs on our shelf.

  • Modern UV filters (Bemotrizinol/Tinosorb S, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone, plus Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide) — a combination of organic and mineral filters that together give broad UVA and UVB protection. Bemotrizinol is known to be highly photostable, meaning the protection holds up under sun exposure. Evidence: verified sources describe bemotrizinol as a broad-spectrum, photostable UVA+UVB filter and Titanium Dioxide + Zinc Oxide as mineral broad-spectrum filters.
  • Ceramide NP — chosen to support the skin barrier. Ceramides are a natural part of the skin's protective lipid layer and help retain moisture. Evidence: sources show Ceramide NP strengthens the barrier and water retention.
  • Urea — a humectant that attracts and binds water in the skin while also reinforcing the barrier. Evidence: verified sources describe urea as a humectant that increases hydration and strengthens the barrier.
  • Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide — a prebiotic that feeds the skin's own microbiome. Evidence: sources describe the ingredient as prebiotic and supportive of the skin microbiome.

03Scientific evidence

Five ingredient studies underpin hp.'s assessment of this product: Ceramide NP (barrier and water retention), Urea (hydration and barrier), Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide (prebiotic microbiome support), Bemotrizinol (broad-spectrum, photostable UVA+UVB filter), and Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide (mineral broad-spectrum filters). The evidence comes from peer-reviewed sources (including Springer and PubMed Central).

On clinical testing we stay restrained: the Swedish Medical Products Agency ran a market inspection of sunscreens, but Skinome's specific pass in that inspection is not independently confirmed and is reported here as the maker's claim. The formulation is vegan according to the maker. We make no independent claims about SPF performance beyond the labelling the maker states.

04Our evaluation notes
  • Broad-spectrum protection built on modern filters — organic plus Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide — with no suspected endocrine disruptors according to the maker.
  • Photostability: bemotrizinol in the formula means the UVA protection holds during exposure, not just at application.
  • A sunscreen that also tends the barrier — Ceramide NP and Urea make it usable daily without a drying feel.
  • Prebiotic Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide as a considered detail rather than marketing — microbiome support in a product you use every morning.
  • Fits a minimalist routine: hydration, barrier and sun protection in one step, without a needless list of additives.
05Frequently asked questions

Can I combine it with retinoids or other actives?

Yes. A broad-spectrum sunscreen like this belongs in the morning and is especially important if you use retinoids, exfoliating acids or vitamin C, which can make skin more sun-sensitive. Apply your active serums first and layer the sunscreen as the final step. The formula itself contains a low level of Lactic Acid as a functional ingredient — it is not intended as an exfoliating treatment.

Is it suitable during pregnancy or perimenopause?

Sunscreen is generally a sensible part of any routine at every life stage, and the barrier-supportive ingredients (Ceramide NP, Urea) can feel good on skin that becomes drier. We do not, however, give medical advice — during pregnancy or for specific skin concerns you should consult your doctor, midwife or skin therapist, or contact the maker about individual ingredients.

Does it contain fragrance?

According to the INCI list there is no perfume (Parfum/Fragrance) or added fragrance. If you are sensitive or allergic, always read the full ingredient list on the packaging, as formulations can be updated.

Morning or evening?

Morning. Sunscreen goes on as the last step of your morning routine and should be applied generously and reapplied through the day during sun or outdoor exposure, per the maker's instructions.

How do I store it and how long does it last?

Store cool and avoid direct heat and sunlight, which matters especially for sunscreen so the filters keep working. Follow the period-after-opening (PAO) symbol and best-before date on the packaging — we give no figures of our own beyond the maker's labelling.

Does it work under makeup and for sensitive skin?

The emulsion format is designed to be worn daily and under makeup as a hydrating final step. The barrier-supportive ingredients and the absence of added fragrance make it interesting for those who prefer a simple routine, but if you have known sensitivity or allergy we recommend a patch test first and reading the full ingredient list.
